A lipoma is a soft, fatty, non-cancerous lump that develops beneath the skin, usually on the back, neck, shoulders, or arms. Lipomas are usually harmless and slow-growing, but they can become unpleasant or ugly, particularly if they get larger or develop in delicate places.
Our goal in treating lipomas is to remove them quickly, safely, and with the least amount of pain and damage possible. For the majority of patients, a straightforward outpatient treatment performed under local anesthetic is sufficient. In certain instances, if the lipoma is tiny and symptomless, surveillance could be advised.

The exact cause is unknown, but lipomas may be hereditary. They are more common in adults between 30–60 years of age.
